Obligatory “Freshly Pressed” Follow-Up Thank-You Ramble

WordPress "Freshly Pressed" badgeIs it okay if I feel proud and sheepish at the same time?

The gracious editors at WordPress liked a post of mine from last week well enough to showcase it as “Freshly Pressed”, meaning a temporary spotlight in the WordPress commons area where thousands of other writers might give it and other folks’ recent “Freshly Pressed” posts a look. It’s extremely kind of them and thoroughly unexpected.

The entry in question was “The Last Stand of the Drive-In Theater: Upgrade or Perish” from last Sunday evening. (My understanding is there’s more of a lag between Freshly Pressed decision-making and actual Freshly Pressed announcements.) Though the deadline to vote in Project Drive-In has now passed (with results to be announced Monday, September 23rd), the entry stands on its own as a synthesis of childhood memories and annoyance with “progress” whenever it manifests as corporate cost-cutting at the expense of the little guys.

Thanks very much to the WordPress editors for the boost, quite surprising to me considering that 1700-word articles are a tough sell in a TL;DR world. Very special thanks and a dusted-off welcome mat are owed to any visitors stopping by MCC for their first time. Dreadful sorry about the minimal site graphics. I remain hopeful that I’ll design an official MCC logo someday before I die. Don’t be shocked if it includes a stick figure.

At the moment I’m still working through the rising tide of email notifications from visitor responses, and trying to sublimate the victor’s guilt stemming from the fact that this is the third Freshly Pressed entry in MCC’s 17-month run. If the honor came with a free statuette, I’d totally share it with anyone out there who’s staring virtual daggers at me right now. If no one is, great! We can all keep enjoying what we do and pretend nothing unusual happened here. Carry on, and thanks for reading!

(For the most curious among you, my About page has been updated to include links for all three entries. Completist stalkers can also follow the “Freshly Pressed” tag on this post to view my two previous thank-you notes, as well as the only guest post I’ve ever been invited to write for another site. This special MCC trivia is on the house just for You, the Viewers at Home.)

    • Thanks, as always, for the kind words and support. 🙂 To me, “stalker completist” is someone who doesn’t just read every MCC post; they also memorize them, look for recurring motifs, notice my running gags, catalog any callbacks to previous posts, and keep a handy list of which adverbs I use too often. Hopefully those extremists are imaginary, but if one ever manifests, then I’ll know I’ve truly arrived as a writer.
