Our 2021 Road Trip: Six Teaser Images on the Go

President Obama statue!

Barack Obama and daughter Sasha say hi! He’s one of 43 different statues of past American Presidents (along with at least two bonus non-President statues) standing on downtown street corners in Rapid City, South Dakota. [UPDATED 7/5/2021 per comments and online verification.]

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover:

Every year since 1999 Anne and I have taken a road trip to a different part of the United States and seen attractions, wonders, and events we didn’t have back home in Indianapolis. From 1999 to 2003 we did so as best friends; from 2004 to the present, as husband and wife…

…and so on. Thus begin variations on the same intro I’ve been using for over eight years and rewritten countless times. I’ll be tweaking it again for this year’s road trip series when it starts, but first:

  • I have a backlog of other entries in mind that ought to be done before I return to that annual tradition.
  • After 2600 miles on the road and seven full days away from real keyboards, I’ll need to remember how to type with these Ben Grimm fingers of mine.
  • Speaking of which, we should actually finish the vacation itself.

If you’re following me on social media, you may already have seen the photos I’ve shared from the road, one per day. Or maybe you haven’t — despite my size, I tend to disappear inside crowds. For value-added convenience, linked below are the Instagram’d versions of the first five images that’ll eventually be part of the full-length narrative for this year’s vacation, which has taken us from our wee Indianapolis home to faraway Yellowstone National Park and (nearly) back again. Our lead photo is a nearly exclusive bonus for MCC readers from this same trip, never before shared online except with maybe two Facebook friends who noticed me burying it in a reply.

More to come in the near future, just for YOU, the Viewers at Home. Well, Lord willing. And assuming no further travel delays, wrong turns, painful wounds, automotive issues, or animal attacks.

(It’s been a long week. Then again, these things always are.)

  1. What beautiful photographs! And, w/out wishing to imply anything one way or the other (after all, I assume they are friends! and I can’t help but assume you and the rest of the MCC audience are aware of who she is!) I think that’s supposed to be young Sasha Obama w/her father.

    • Some quick fact-checking confirms you’re correct! The caption has been updated to read slightly less weirdly. We aren’t deeply familiar with his daughters’ respective childhoods, and comparing her likeness to current photos did us no good for obvious reasons. Thanks for catching that and holding us accountable!

      • Wow, I was right!? In acceptance of your thanks, well, I think the occasion calls for me to (mis)quote my three favourite separate individual people — actor Dwayne Johnson and famed wrestler The Rock and Polynesian trickster hero Maui: “♫ WHAT CAN I SAY BUT HEY YOU’RE WELCOME ♫”.

        • By astonishing coincidence that’s also the winning catchphrase in his new film Disney’s Jungle Cruise as uttered no less than sixteen times to an increasingly furious Emily Blunt by his heroic original new character John Jacob Jungleheimer Cruisenschmidt! His on-call script doctor is on a roll!
